the article i chose for my presentation :)~

For the royal family, today was a typical day-after-the-bombshell. Queen Elizabeth II was at Sandringham, the northern estate, where her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, shot clay pigeons. The Princess of Wales smiled for the cameras when she took her two sons to play tennis in London. The Prince of Wales was lying low, visiting two hospices near his home at Highgrove in Gloucestershire.
They left it to the spokespeople, spin doctors, unnamed friends and "royal correspondents" of the newspapers, opining portentously in newsprint and on radio and television, to deal with the storm unleashed by the news that the Queen had urged Prince Charles and Diana to bring their failed 14-year marriage to a quick divorce.
For people on the street, hard put to step around screaming headlines and talk show proclamations, the attitude was that of a bedside friend who had been holding a dying pulse for a long time.
"About time," said one taxi driver. "Enough said. Let them get on with their lives."
Everyone agrees that the British monarchy is going through its worst crisis since 1936, when Edward VIII was forced to give up the crown because of his love for an American divorcee. What they are not sure of, now that a possible denouement is at hand, is whether a divorce would end the crisis.
By intervening this week to urge a rapid divorce, the Queen is trying to avoid what journalists and others who keep an eye on Buckingham Palace call the "nightmare scenario," which could happen right now if she were to die.
Then the feud between her heir and his estranged wife would be a serious matter indeed. There would be a hostile king and queen, each with a separate court and conspiring coteries of attendants and publicists, splitting the House of Windsor and endangering the monarchy.
That ugly prospect would be put to rest the instant a divorce decree became final, because then the Princess could no longer become Queen.
But even with a divorce, the problems do not go away. Unlike Wallis Simpson, the twice-divorced American who lived with her husband, the ex-king, in luxurious but ignominious exile in Paris for decades, the 34-year-old Diana is not about to disappear.
One major question is whether the 47-year-old Prince would remarry. As every school child here knows, the Church of England has its origins in one of history's most celebrated divorces -- that of Henry VIII from Catherine of Aragon, which split it from Rome. But the Church frowns on remarriages of divorced people, particularly when their ex-spouses are still living.
Since the monarch is also the spiritual leader of the Church, bearing the coronation title of "Defender of the Faith," some eminent clerics have said it would unacceptable for the Prince to have the throne if he marries Camilla Parker Bowles, the woman he is said to have loved, and with whom he carried on an affair during his marriage.
Today, Buckingham Palace sought to stifle such talk by announcing that the Prince was thinking of no such thing. "Should there be a divorce, the Prince of Wales has no intention of remarrying," said Alan Percival, the Prince's spokesman. But no one at the palace was willing to interpret the statement as meaning that the Prince was forever forgoing the possibility of remarriage.
"If asked, 'Do you intend to get remarried?' the answer is no," said one official in the royal household. "But that's not the same question as, 'Will you never ever in your life remarry?' I don't think anyone is ever prepared to answer that question."
Another eventuality that no one in authority is prepared to discuss publicly is what might happen with a single king sitting on the throne. It is unlikely that the British press, which has avidly documented every twist and turn in the sad saga of the Prince's love life so far, would leave him alone.
Nor is it clear that the British public, which since the days of Queen Victoria has regarded the royal family as a sort of standard of middle-class respectability, would sit still while he carried on relationships outside of marriage. This might be especially true for Mrs. Parker Bowles, who is now herself divorced but seen by many people as a marriage-breaker.
A public opinion poll taken by the respected outfit MORI on Nov. 21 found that 61 percent of a sample of 580 adults thought the Waleses, as they are known, should get divorced, but almost as high a percentage -- 59 -- thought Prince Charles should not be allowed to become king if he married Mrs. Parker Bowles.
Another problem for Buckingham Palace is what to do with the Princess of Wales. The fact that she did not respond today to the Queen's call for a divorce -- her lawyers were reported to be studying the Queen's letter -- was seen by commentators here as a sign that she will strike a hard bargain.
Most expect that the Princess, who had said earlier that she would follow her husband's wishes, will retain some custody rights over their two sons and gain a hefty financial settlement.
No matter what happens, she will remain the mother of the heir, 13-year-old Prince William, and so must somehow be given a place in the arcana of court protocol and ceremony. Even the question of her title -- should she still merit being called Her Royal Highness? -- could become a conundrum for hair-splitting monarchists.
Furthermore, her looks and crowd-pleasing style have won considerable popularity, bringing a touch of down-to-earth humanity to a family that strikes many as aloof and frigid. Her publicly documented tribulations, ranging from bulimia to post-partum depression and self-mutilation, have made her a 1990's icon of suffering that some identify with.
Lastly, there is the question of Diana's obvious bitterness toward her husband and in-laws and her new assertiveness, which has flourished under treatment by an American-born therapist.
"She won't go quietly -- that's the problem," she said, speaking of herself in the third person, in a riveting BBC interview a month ago. She said that she would like to be a roving ambassador for Britain, a prospect that does not go down very well at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and to be given some sort of public role as a person who cares about the ill and the poor.
In the same interview, she also let drop the thought that perhaps Prince Charles was not temperamentally suited to be king and suggested that perhaps the crown should skip over him and go to her son.
But in drawing up this uncertain calculus, members of the royal family and the Government, which under the Constitution has a strong say in royal affairs, are surely aware that in other times of crisis for the royal family, one key element affecting outcome has been public opinion.
"What drove Edward VIII from the throne was public opinion articulated by a Tory Prime Minister and backbenchers," said David Starkey, a constitutional expert at the London School of Economics. "Public opinion is not yet ready to drive Charles from the throne."

My topics in oral presentation

I will give you presentation about the British Royal Family. In detail, my topics are their organization, duty and role. It is related to my novel “Bridget Jones’s Diary” because it takes place in the UK. The United Kingdom is one of the nations which choose the constitutional monarchy. This political system is different from that of any other countries including the USA, Korea and so on. Isn’t it interesting? Besides, I’ve been interested in England for long time so I think it’s the chance to know about it well. That’s why I choose these topics.

*Sources :) !
I am going to find and use other sources while I prepare my presentation!

Let me introduce the novel i chose XD

Let me introduce my novel.  I chose “Bridget Jones’s Diary” written by Helen Fielding.  It is a romance novel that has a form of individual diary.  There are 271 pages in this book and I’m on 121 pages now.  This story takes part in the present-day in England.  The weather in this book is changing because it is one-year diary of Bridget Jones.  As a matter of course, Bridget Jones tells about her daily life; for example, there are her love, misunderstanding, parting and meeting.  She usually writes a sentence without a subject and uses lots of slangs.  Therefore, I cannot understand what she means perfectly.  I think it has local color that is about England and people can realized those facts in every parts of this book; indeed, there are some kinds of the British ways of talking, custom, practice and so on.  Occuring in England, this is common story about a career woman in these days so it can take place in many places.
Next I will tell about my favorite character.  To tell the truth, I like Mark Darcy who will be Bridget’s boyfriend but he doesn’t appear apparently yet on my page.  So now, I like Bridget Jones who is the main character in this book.  She is one of common career women who can’t marry because of their jobs. That is an old lady.  Frankly speaking, she doesn’t have any abilities especially about love and wishy-washy because she frequently makes mistakes.  Moreover, most people except for her friends usually ignore her.  Sometimes she even makes me embarrassed because of her foolishness and poor situations.  However she is really positive and humorous.  She is not perfect so different from main characters in other novels, and she is frank with everything.  For these reasons, I feel really familiar with her and cannot hate her.  She is worried about everything such as her weight, how she can attract the guy who she loves and so on like women in reality.  Therefore, I think I’m similar with her, and I can connect emotionally with her while I read this book.  However she’d better be more decisive on love.  She always accepts Daniel who is her boss even though he toys with her affection.  I want her not to follow only her instinct at all.  Anyway, Bridget Jones is my favorite character.

Newspaper response1 :)

Summary)
According to this article, a woman who operates a farm was found guilty because she let a young girl see a dog being euthanized. In fact, she was giving mercy killing to 3 dogs which injured a man and killed a cat. A judge ruled that this situation was so violent that can endanger child but not guilty in animal cruelty. However, the woman looked that she couldn’t accept this judgment; so, she said that there was no substantive investigation in our criminal justice system and added it was a sad commentary.
My response)
I also don’t agree the judgment that she was guilty because it’s an excessive punishment. The judgment that was sentenced made her lose reputation and even damaged her family and her business. Honestly, that situation was a little bit her mistake that made a kid witness a dog dying. Yet, it was just a euthanasia, not violent killing. It made a girl be curious, but didn’t influence her badly as judge’s saying. I mean that is a severe punishment comparing to her mistake.

Most students in my university are pretty good at all parts of English such as reading, writting, speakng and etc. They also have experience going abroad for studying English. Some students are even really like native speaker. For these reasons, I lost my self-respect so I finally decided to come to Seattle and SCCC :)

I mean, I like English as the method for communication but hate learning it in detail as major. I studied phonetics, phonology, syntax and something like that in last year because of my major. As you know, it's really hard, boring and terrible. It doesn't help me to use English besides it's not pratical. Therefore, I will do multi-majoring! I don't choose another major yet because it's a pretty serious problem.
I'd better think more about it. Please recommend me interesting and useful majoring :-D lol

News summary : A madman's work

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2015702605_norway23.html

1. SUMMARY
Almost 80 teenagers participating in a political conference were killed by a Norwegian who disguised as a police officer in an island. He also made an explosion in nearby Oslo and investigators realized the fact that these events occurred by the same person after several hours.
Norway is known for peace so government buildings aren’t heavily fortified. The attacks seemed to disagree with a cultural shift.
At first, police thought about 10 were killed at camp on the island of Utoya but actually there were many more victims who were young. Some were killed and others were severely injured.
A suspect who made these tragedies was arrested on the island. Broadcaster NRK informed identity of the suspect. He is Anders Behring Brivik, a 32 year-man. The suspect pretended to act alone in both attacks and police also considered that he wasn’t related to any international terrorist organizations. He was proved to be a right-wing extremist with anti-Muslim views. These attacks seemed to be linked to the Labor Party government because the youth camp was for the party’s youth wing and Prime Minister had been scheduled to have speech there.
Oslo was in shambles because of the blast. Especially the office of the prime minister was damaged. The attacks would give a deep impact to many residents. Norway had been considered as open and safe country. That is because they thought the security measures were unnecessary in Norway. Those events change thinking of people about fortifying.
The camp shootings started about 2 hours later after the Oslo bombing. The police expected the suspect used both automatic weapons and handguns and there may be one unexploded bomb at youth camp so they were working to remove it.
By the blast Oslo, 7 people were killed and 10 people were seriously injured. On the island, there were some survivors in the sea although many people were murdered.
The prime minister visited injured people and said Norway democracy won’t destroyed by those attacks.
The U.S president consoled to Norway and promised to offer supporting. Many analysts regarded at least two Islamic extremist groups were related.

2. Personal Response
I don't understand why he did that.  He shouldn't have made these calamity eventhough he had the valid reason. It's quite absurd to kill innocent people because he was also same human being as them. He is not god and even have nothing better than victims. He have to shoulder the responsibility of these two massacres. I'm too shocked to talk about it and I pray for the repose of the victims. Finally, Norway ought to bear a saying that Danger comes when you least expect it in their mind.

3. New vocabraries
*scope (noun) : the extent of the area or subject matter that something deals with or to which it is relevant
*massacre (noun) : an indiscriminate and brutal slaughter of people
